Refrigerant Leak Detection Near Me in Makawao, HI

A refrigerant leak in an HVAC system reduces cooling capacity, raises electric bills, and risks damaging the compressor if it runs low for too long. Detection in Makawao, HI requires specialized equipment and EPA-certified handling — it's not a DIY repair.

Common signs of refrigerant leaks in Makawao, HI include AC that runs constantly without cooling well, ice forming on the evaporator coil or refrigerant lines, hissing sounds from the indoor or outdoor unit, oily residue on refrigerant connections (refrigerant oil indicates a leak), and steadily rising electric bills as the system works harder.

Refrigerant leak detection uses a few different methods depending on suspected location and severity. Electronic leak detectors find small leaks anywhere refrigerant escapes — sensitive enough to detect leaks too small to see or hear. UV dye injected into the system shows up under a UV lamp at the leak location. Soap-bubble testing finds larger leaks at fittings. Pressure tests confirm whether the system holds nitrogen at proper pressure overnight.

Once the leak is identified, repair tactics depend on location and severity. A leaking flare fitting gets re-flared. A pinhole in a soldered joint gets repaired or the joint replaced. Coil leaks (especially common on aging evaporators) often mean coil replacement — and on older systems with higher mileage, a leaking evaporator coil may tip the conversation toward system replacement.

For Makawao, HI systems using R-22 (manufactured before 2010), continuing to repair leaks rarely makes sense — the refrigerant is expensive and limited. Newer R-410A and R-454B/R-32 systems are more economical to repair.
